Hello Friends and Family
Welcome to our new blog. Most of you have been waiting to see pictures of our beautiful baby, Konrad Cedric Deetz, well.... here he is. Some of you may not know the story of how he came early (9 weeks early), so I will let you in on the tale.
At Christmas time I was getting towards the end of my second trimester and I was going to start my internship at the beginning of the new year, so I decided to put in my two weeks notice at work. When I told my mom, she offered to pay for me to come out and visit her and my two sisters (who are also pregnant). I decided to quit early and go to Minnesota the day after Christmas until the day before New Years.
During the flight to Minnesota I began to really swell up. By the time I landed in Minneapolis I looked like the girl on Willy Wonka who swelled up (Violet). I had a great time in Minnesota despite my swelling and discomfort.
When I got home I had an appointment with my doctor for the monthly check up in two days (on Friday). At that check up they discovered that my blood pressure had risen, I was leaking protein, and I was swollen up.... I had preclampsia. They sent me to the hospital for observation.
I stayed at the hospital for several hours until they ran out of room for me and sent me home with strict instructions to be on bed rest and to not get up for anything other than to go to the bathroom. This lasted for one week until my next appointment (on Thursday).
At my Thursday appointment they decided that my blood pressure had risen so far that they needed to send me to a hospital with a NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) because they would need to take the baby out before I went into seizures or had a stroke (my BP was 150's/120's).
The closest hospital was 45min away in Charlottesville, but it was full, so I got sent to Roanoke (2 hours away) in an ambulance (which they wouldn't turn the lights on for me, I was soooo mad), in a hospital gown, with a catheter and an IV. They wouldn't even let Craig ride with me (not that he would have because he needed a car, but it would have been nice if they had offered). I was sooo not happy! The ambulance worker wouldn't even talk to me. He told me he was too boring to be of any interest to me so I should just go to sleep. How rude!!
When I got to Roanoke it was about 10pm and I got little sleep the whole night with them poking, prodding, monitoring, and checking me out. They wouldn't let me eat anything in case they needed to send me to surgery quickly.
At around 12 o'clock the next day (Friday) they decided they were going to take the baby. They wanted me to decide whether I wanted a C-section or to be induced. HELLO!!! C-Section!!!!! Why go through the pain if I didn't have to! Besides they told me the chances of me having to have a C-section after they induced me would be very high. Why in the world would I want to be induced then??? I'm not stupid!
I got taken to the surgery at around 6:30 and by 7 pm I had my baby, K.C.. Because I was still on the IV with a very heavy dosage of muscle relaxants (so I wouldn't go into a seizure) I wasn't able to see my baby until Sunday. It was hard to have Craig go and see him and only get to see pictures of the event.
By Sunday I was feeling great, sore but great. I got to see my baby and the landslide of pictures began.
I was able to stay in Roanoke at the Ronald McDonald house for a while after I was released (4 days later) until I had to start back at work again. Craig and I would drive up to Roanoke almost every night after work so that we could see Konrad for an hour or two and then we would drive back. I was able to stay at the Ronald McDonald house on weekends.
Luckily for us Konrad didn't have any complications (other than the fact that his veins were too thin to hold the flow of fluids they had pumping through the IV and his veins would rupture. They had to change the IV about every day to a new spot). We were able to take him home after only 4 weeks in the NICU. During that time he went from3lbs 7oz to 5lbs. Yay!!!!
He is now home and today we are celebrating his 2 month Birthday! Happy 2 months Baby!!! More recent pictures to come.
